Upper Mustang Trek Itinerary
Day 1 - Arrival Day
Personal welcome at Kathmandu Airport and transfer to your hotel in the tourist district of Thamel. After a short briefing on our trip plans you will be able to go out to explore the local temples and markets.
Day 2 - Kathmandu City Tour
After breakfast we will tour the city, visiting many of the “City of Temples” historic landmarks including Durbar Square, Pashupatinath Temple, and the stunning Boudhanath Stupa.
Day 3 - Kathmandu to Pokhara
We will take a Tourist Bus to Nepals second largest city of Pokhara. We will stay at the vibrant Lakeside area at hotel for the night where you can explore the beautiful Lake Phewa during the evening. 7 hours driving.
Day 4 - Pokhara to Kagbeni (2800m)
Today we will take a scenic flight to the start of our trek in the mountain town of Jomson. Our short flight saves us a full days bus ride and also gives us an amazing view of the 8000 metre peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. From Jomson we will have a short afternoons trek to the beautiful village of Kagbeni for the night. 3 hours trekking.
Day 5 - Kagbeni to Chele (3050m)
Our trail follows the Kali Gandaki up the valley and into the restricted area of Upper Mustang. We will pass through many small villages on this trading route before arriving at Chele for the night where we have an amazing view back down the valley at Annapurna’s glistening white peak high above us. 6 hours trekking.
Day 6 - Chele to Syangmochen (3720m)
Our day starts with a steady ascent as our trail climbs our from the valley and up to the mountainside village of Samar where we will stop for lunch and a rest. Our afternoons hike will take us through a spectacular valley of rocky outcrops and cliffs where we will find the ancient Chungsi cave monastery. 8 hours trekking.
Day 7 - Syangmochen to Ghami (3550m)
Today we will have a much easier walk with a gradual climb up to Ghiling for lunch before continuing onto the cute village of Ghami for the night. From along the trail we will have great views of the high Himalayas around us that have protected this valley for so long. 5 hours trekking.
Day 8 - Ghami to Tsarang (3560m)
As we leave Ghami we will pass the longest Mani Wall in the world stretching out as far as you can see of carved stones. We will also pass sets of ancient clay buddhist stupa’s that look as old as the hills around them. As we arrive you will now need to have the stunning red cliffs of Dhakmar pointed out to you as them nature wonders rise above us. Ofter enjoying our lunch in this beautiful environment we will continue over the hills to the small town of Tsarang that is home to the most beautiful monastery and palace. 6 hours trekking.
Day 9 - Tsarang to Lo Manthang (3810m)
From Tsarang we will make our way up the valley to the oldest buddhist monastery in the world the 8th century Ghar Gompa. After looking through the the prayer flag covered building we will continue on up over a small pass before descending into the fertile grassland that surround the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang. During the afternoon you will have time to explore the ancient streets of this timeless city. 6 hours trekking.
Day 10 - Lo Manthang Day Trip
Today we will take a walk through some of the beautiful villages that dot the landscape up here. Along the way we will visit the famous Garphu Caves and colourful Nyphu Gompa. Back in Lo Manthang we will have time to visit the many monasteries that fill the city and any other cafes or bakeries that you might find along the way. 4 hours walking.
Day 11 - Lo Manthnag to Yara & Luri Gompa (3720m)
We will follow the road out of Lo Manthang and before too long onto a ridge top trail towards the village of Yara. Are we traverse the ridge line we will have 360 degree views of the Mustang Valley before we descend down to the beautiful old village of Dhi for lunch. All around Dhi and as we trek onwards to Yara we will be able to see the remnants of the ancient cave settlements of the early peoples that made the cliffs their home. In the afternoon we will walk up to explore the ancient cave monastery that was carved into the cliffs hundreds of years ago before returning to Yara for the night. 6 hours trekking.
Day 12 - Yara to to Tange (3520m)
Today start traversing down the Mustang valley slowing heading towards the Muktinath Temple. The old trail traverses across the arid hillsides and through streams of meltwater from the peaks that line the valley. There are no villages in this barren landscape so we will have a picnic to have along the way. When you see the vibrant green irrigated fields you know we will soon be at the village of Tange where we will stay for the night. 6 hours trekking.
Day 13 - Tange to Tetang (3310m)
We will leave our beautiful little settlement of Tange and climb back up along the mountainside trails towards the next village of Tetang. The trail is often steep but our efforts will be rewarded with amazing views of the beautiful mountains all around us. We will cross a couple of small passes during the day before descending back down to Tetang village for the night. 9 hours trekking.
Day 14 - Tetang to Muktinath (3760m)
We have one more climb and then our trail flattens out as we come to the vold viallges of Jhong Thinggar and then Muktinath. After stopping at our guesthouse we will join the many other pilgrims and climb up to the sacred Hindu Temple of Muktinath. 6 - 7 hours trekking.
Day 15 - Muktinath to Kagbeni (2800m)
After a few long and strenuous days trekking we will have a nice and easy stroll down to Kagbeni village that we came through so many days ago. On our way down the valley we can stop and have a look around the beautiful village and monastery of Jharkot. 3 hours walking.
Day 16 - Kagbeni to Jomsom (2720m)
After a casual start to the day and maybe so the of the famous apple pie that can be found here we will leave the picturesque Kagbeni and return down the valley to Jomson. We will easily reach Jomson by lunch time where we will have time to relax, put our feet up and enjoy a beer before we fly back to Pokhara and Kathmandu.
Day 17 - Return to Kathmandu
We will fly from Jomson to Pokhara and then onwards back to Kathmandu. We will meet up for a final dinner together before we have to say goodbye.
Day 18 - Departure
Transfer to Kathmandu Airport.
